About Atna

Incorporated in 2018 and with over 20 years’ experience, Atna is a small team of experienced environmental professionals based in Terrace, BC. We have built a reputation for high quality service and strong relationships with clients, regulators, and local Indigenous communities. Atna specializes in supporting clients working in environmentally sensitive ecosystems, including freshwater and marine environments, wetlands, estuaries, and wildlife corridors. What sets us apart from other environmental firms is that we work collaboratively with our clients to understand their needs and develop environmental management systems that are achievable and practical. Our team combines local resources, knowledge, and relationships to deliver strategic advice and quality services and deliverables. We have managed and lead multiple large-scale projects across the Northwest in the marine, oil and gas, hydroelectric, and government sectors.
Our Story

Born and raised in coastal British Columbia, it started in childhood – summer camping trips, canoeing with Dad, hiking through old forests, beach combing and searching tide pools for critters, fishing with grandpa, and building tree forts with the other kids in the neighbourhood. Being exposed to this natural environment captured our young imaginations and that translated into a passion and curiosity for the natural world as we grew. We never imagined we could build a career out of our passion for the natural world. We live, work, and play in this environment. We understand that development is necessary to meet humanity’s needs, and we are passionate about helping projects advance while helping the natural world continue to thrive.

Starting as junior field technicians at small consulting firms, we progressed to more senior roles in larger entities for mentorship and growth. However, we grew disappointed with ineffective leadership and profit-driven priorities. Junior staff lacked preparation and guidance, while hard-working individuals were undervalued. We were tired of profit-over-quality mindsets and frustrated by overly complex approaches hindering client progress. That’s why we founded Atna: to work outdoors, help clients advance development responsibly, and deliver practical, high-quality services efficiently and cost-effectively.

Our Namesake

Atna Peak (8,937 ft 2724 m) – 53.939747 N  -128.045255 W

The third highest peak in the Kitimat Ranges of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains lying 70 kilometers southeast of the city of Terrace, Atna Peak stands as a sentinel which has watched the ebb and flow of ice ages and seasons unfold in its shadow for eons. Where glaciers once sculpted the deep valleys about its flanks, mighty rivers now flow which serve as the lifeblood of a thriving ecosystem. It straddles the lands the Wet’suwet’en and Gitselasu people have called home for millennia. The Clore, Dala, Kitimat, Kemano, and Morice Rivers all have their source on this mighty peak. Mountaineers have not yet braved its slopes in a bid for its icy wind-swept summit. Thick stands of towering ancient conifers adorn its remote slopes. Winter brings deep snowpacks. Moose graze bare riparian thickets while trying to elude the grey wolves that hunt them. Following the long dark and lonely silence, the woodlands are filled with the familiar songs of migratory birds on their annual trek along migration corridors. Summer produces a rich harvest of blueberries which rewards those determined enough the brave the oceans of Devil’s club. Grizzlies traverse the surrounding passes which link several salmon-rich river valleys. Ravens as large as vultures make their haunting calls from atop lonely snags. The eerie departing song of thrushes can be heard as the last light of autumn filters through the forest canopy. For all the roads and corridors civilization has carved through this wilderness, it remains a wild and imposing place which commands respect, with the silent mountain ever watchful.
